Category 1 defects

2nd August 2010

Hi, Can you please inform me of the depth a pot hole has to be to be classified as a Category 1. Do you think it's approx anything over 2" deep?

Thanks in advance for your help.

On a road I assume, as opposed to a footway?

Highway authorities set their own standards for what constitutes a category 1 defect, so the definitive answer can only be found by asking the relevant authority. Historically, >50mm has been the benchmarch, but local highway authorites rely on the national code of good practice for advice, and that suggests a depth of >40mm. It can also differ depending on whether the road is urban or rural and whether pedestrians regularly use the road.
