Council car park

How does the local Councils liability and responsibilities differ when concerning their car parks as opposed to highways? I have found lots of usefull advice on here about compensation for damage caused by potholes on the roads but am struggling when it comes to car parks. The car park I'm concerned with is actually a lay by on a B road but it's sign posted as a free council car park. Please tell me where I stand as the damage caused to my car has made it undrivable!

There is no reason why you could not write to them and ask them what the standards are in relation to the car park and whether or not it is inspected. Once you have this information to hand, you will be better equipped to move forward.
