B915 pothole Cupra k1 wheel killer

by Pblondw

31 Dec 2010

Having decided to do a friend a Cavour and pick him up from St Andrews I left in the dark around 8pm from my home in Dunfermline, along the B915. On the way I hit an un-seen pothole that actully made both myself and my daughter gasp with the noise and shock. The car was ok though so we carried on to St Andrews well enough.
Unfortunately for me,having decided to take the same route home, instead of the motorway, which is a considerable longer route,I went back along the same road.
Although I drive a high powered car,( which is my baby,by the baby) I was taking it easy because of the road conditions and freezing fog patches. As I took a tight bend and came out onto the straight the killer pothole got me! The impact noise was horrific to say the least, and within 3-4 seconds it was obvious I had a major problem.
The tyre was flapping about and handling non-existent . It was now around 10.30 pm so not the best of times to get out of a car on an unlit road in the middle of nowhere, but fortunately for me,I had a strapping RAF guy in the back of the car,who got out with me to inspect the damage. I was appalled to discover that not only did I now have a shredded tyre but my very expensive 18" white alloy was a right off. Granted,I have low profile tyres, but I don't think a tractor would have servived this.
With only being a quarter of a mile from home, the only option was to limp it back as the outside temp was well below to walk, and luckily a kind motorist tailed us with his hazards flashing.
On closer inspection this morning, with a stiff coffee and nicotine fix,I stood gazing at my once beautiful car and cryer. After making some phone calls, the upshot is that my options are as follows.
Claim on my own insurance as advised by swift cover,as they don't believe a claim against the highways agency would be successful. .......excess being £750 lol.
4 new alloys and a new tyre,as these were a limited edition alloy and I drive on Pirelli tyres.......cost of £1000 ish....lol
Stick a set of cheap things on from Halfords......boo hoo!
So,watch out for the k1 killer on this road, infect there is more than 1 and please be careful. My husband rides a racing motorbike, and although not in this weather or time of year,as this is a road we ride out on often,I can only imagine the carnage this hole would cause if a bike hit it. ....happy motoring
