Pot Hole Car Damage

by leepaulcurtis

02 Jan 2011

Road: Parkstone Avenue, Hornchurch, Essex
My Car: Mini
Damage: Tyre and alloy damage. Tracking adjustment

I have just returned from Kwik-fit and I am not best pleased. I got a bill for a new run flat tyre and a cost for tracking. I do know that compared to other stories mine might not seem so bad but it's only the 2nd Jan 2011. Could my year of started better.. The cost being £200. This is not what I wanted to start the year with.

The pothole for anyone living in the Hornchurch, Essex area is down a road called Parkstone Avenue. In the day you can kind of see it and have enough time to avoid it but at night with no light shinning on it then it is near impossible to notice. I was driving at night at a speed of around 25mph. I might this pothole and knew straight away that I had done damage. My steering was pulling to the left and my car just felt different when driving. I got out straight away to inspect my tyre but on initial inspection could not see any damage. I took some pictures straight away of this and on closer look could really see how deep it was and how easy it is to cause damage to cars. There was even all the rubble that had come from the hole pushed to the side of the road. What I dont get is that this hole nearly covers someones drive. If I was that house hold I would of been onto the counsil straight away before letting it get that bad. Or at least sweep the rubble back in to the hole to fill it a bit. Instead its just been left.

The kwik-fit employee told me that 2 other cars within an hour or each other come in with near enough the same damage complaining about the same pothole. I know it's been a slow few weeks due to xmas break but the counsil/highway department should of at least put a sign up to warn drivers coming down that road.

I think my main reason for this story is to not let it get to a stage where there is a serious accident down that road due to this pothole. Hitting it hard enough could easily cause a serious accident if someone lost control of there car.

I would add my pictures but for some reason this site will not let me. If you know how I can do it now even though I have posted this story I will try again.

If the council have been negligent you might have a chance of successfully claiming back the costs you incurred as a result of this pothole. Take a look at our "how to claim" section for more details on this. rnrnCould you upload the pictures so we can see what size hole we are talking about? Different councils have different dimensions when it comes to classifying whether a fault is actually a pothole and so requires repairing and if it doesn't reach these then they wait for it to deteriorate. Clever, eh?
