Successful Damage Claim

by ZMBOY

11 Sep 2011

My son damage the wheel and tyre on his car in February this year after hitting a large pothole in Glasgow. The damage was such that the vehicle mechanic described it as a square wheel.
I photographed the wheel and locus and requested a claim form the council which was submitted with full details(photoes, sketches etc),statement from my son and car engineer.
At the same time I made a Freedom of Information request to the council re all reports, inspections and repairs to the road at this time.
Due to the heavy number of claims it was August this year when an insurance assessor asked to examine the wheel.
The council then responded with an offer which was about £150 lower than I had claimed but was nevertheless a reasonable sum which I accepted.
I would say that this was a worthwhile excercise and did not take too much effort on my behalf.
An interesting point that I discovered was that the FOI request showed that a number of reports had been made to the council regarding damage to the road surface where the pothole was located over a number of months prior to the incident.
