South Harting B2146 West Sussex
16 Jul 2012
Following a car in front plus the sunlight (yes there actually was some!) through the trees causing a dappled light to hide the pothole meant I did not see it at all and as it lay right on the 'wheel line' both my offside wheels fell into it at about 25mph. The bang was enough to make me think I had hit something and to then pull over and return to find the cause - a very large and deep pothole. I then discovered the front driver's side wheel was damaged and so had to call the RAC. I have had to have the wheel replaced at a cost of £213 and am hoping there is no other hidden damage. The car seems to drive ok with the new wheel on. I have reported the incident to West Sussex CC and await a claim form from them. Have many good photos but too large in file size to upload here - will try to find a way around this.
Update on damage - further problems have now resulted in 2 new alloy wheels and 2 new tyres at a cost of nearly £600. Comment from 'suttong' suggests pothole known about and been there a while. Surely needed a warning sign until filled, very dangerous, not your average pothole even! Am pursuing West Sussex CC, have claim form, but not expecting speedy payout! Will persevere though.
Well there is a story. I had 4 new tyres fited to my car on July 10th and next day hit thesame pot hole just going out of speed resticted area south of Harting damah=ge to offside wheel and tyre. Regretfully I'll need a full set of new alloys and a tyre
