Potholes- The solution is already here

by Rhino

19 Feb 2007

Clearly, the issue of potholes in our roads is a very emotive topic to motorists, taxpayers and the general public. Respective Governments, whist attempting to address the issue, have failed to find a sustainable solution to the problem.

The simple fact is that the majority of local authorities use repair methodology that does not last and consequently the problem never actually goes away. Currently, around 30% of the total UK road maintenance budget is being wasted on these temporary repairs resulting in continual disruption, increasing insurance claims and insufficient funding to repair new potholes. It is a vicious circle.

Quite bizarrely, sustainable road repair technology is readily available that will resolve this problem immediately and yet local authorities, renowned for their reluctance to change, choose to 'soldier on' with traditional techniques that, quite clearly, are not working.

Even more concerning is the fact that this permanent patching innovation, which is fully approved by the Highways Agency and Department for Transport , costs less than conventional repairs, protects the natural environment, minimises disruption and reduces Co2 emissions by around 85% when compared to the conventional processes used by councils.

Progressive local authorities, who have adopted this new innovation, are demonstrating significant cost savings, reduced claims, minimised disruption and non-recurring potholes.

Being involved in the development of this unique road repair innovation, we are as frustrated as the general public as to why local authorities continue with old and failing techniques when they have the option of a completely sustainable alternative.

My motive for posting this article is not purely for promotional purposes and is to give some comfort to the readers in that a permanent solution to the problem with potholes is now available. Unfortunately, the speed of implementation with this innovation will largely depend upon the voice of the general public, road users and taxpayers demanding change.
